Power Outage in a 15-Storey Apartment Building in Central Amsterdam
A challenging fault: a power outage in a large part of a 15-storey apartment building in the heart of Amsterdam. The busbar, which transports energy from the transformer to the top floors, had failed.
The customer’s request: to set up a temporary power supply so the entire building could be supplied with electricity again. Due to the location, both CO2 emissions and noise levels had to be kept to a minimum. We opted for a hybrid 800-kilowatt system, where the generator only runs during peak hours around 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
To get 1000 amps of current to the upper floors, we manually laid three parallel 185 mm² cables along the stairwell and shaft. With a 12-man team, we ensured the cables were carried by hand from the ground floor up to the 15th floor.
Once our technicians connected the cables to the LV switchboard, the hybrid system could be commissioned. Within a single day, the building was once again fully supplied with energy. With the right people and resources, complex outages can be solved quickly and efficiently.
