TU Delft operates its own medium-voltage ring. Outside the building, Joulz installed an emergency power supply, including a 2500 kVA transformer with a powerlock system on the 23 kV grid. During outages or maintenance, Joulz and Voet must be able to quickly and easily switch over and take control of the installation. A key customer requirement: the system must be able to switch both synchronously onto the grid and synchronously back again.

Our Approach

With a 3150 kVA generator and our wireless synchronization technology, we made this possible. We were able not only to take over the system synchronously, but also to switch it back synchronously — without a local reference point.

On the client’s industrial site, several substations are located within the same 23 kV grid, spread out over several kilometers. For the synchronous takeover, we connected directly at the emergency station with full backup power — a step that is part of our daily operations.

The return transfer, however, posed a bigger challenge. Neither the emergency station nor TU Delft’s facility had a reference point, which is essential for synchronous grid transfer. To solve this, we used our Wireless Synchronization Box to fetch a reference point from 3 km away and bring it to our generator. We then set the installation at TU Delft’s intake station to ‘12 o’clock’ and performed the synchronous switch back.

Technology and Trust

Wireless synchronization involves complex technical challenges, such as phase angle shifts, rotation directions of the 23 kV installation, and voltage differences. Thanks to our experienced team, innovative solutions, and the trust of our long-term clients, we are able to apply these techniques successfully.

Together, we are building a smarter and more sustainable energy future!
