Energy Transition Hampered by the Dutch Power Grid

The electricity grid is under heavy strain. As a result, solar panels are increasingly being shut down—precisely when the sun is shining, they produce nothing. One of the main causes is the massive growth in the number of solar panels in recent years.

Voet Energy Solutions notices this as well: our Blue Battery Boxes are being used more and more—often by grid operators—to store energy.

In certain parts of the Netherlands, the power grid is outdated. This congestion can hinder the energy transition; the cables lack the capacity to handle the electricity generated by, for example, wind turbines and solar panels. When the sun is shining brightly, a lot of electricity is generated but often little is consumed. If this causes the grid voltage to become too high, the inverters shut down the solar panels. This means that electricity must once again be drawn from the regular power grid—often not green energy.

Voet aims to help grid operators achieve the European climate targets. That’s why we increasingly deploy battery packs in cooperation with them. These battery packs temporarily relieve the capacity problems on the Dutch grid. The Voet Clean Energy battery packs have capacities of up to 1,000 kWh—enough to store an equivalent amount of solar energy.

By using battery packs, the slowdown in the energy transition can be reduced. Grid operators are already working hard on a permanent solution to this congestion. A large part of the low-voltage network is being replaced. This is essential for the continuation of the energy transition, as electrification will further increase—driven by, for example, the growing popularity of electric cars and heat pumps.
