Dual Fuel Generators
Earlier, we wrote about the hydrogen generator. Hydrogen can also be used in combination with diesel. Voet is currently exploring the possibilities of deploying dual fuel generators. Such a system can run an engine on two types of fuel. A similar technology is already used in cars that run on gas.
What is Dual Fuel?
A generator with a dual fuel system does not need to compromise on power output, while at the same time significantly reducing NOx and CO₂ emissions. The great advantage of this technology is that there’s no need to purchase new generators. Existing diesel generators can be converted to dual fuel.
What is the Consumption of a Dual Fuel Generator?
It is expected that a dual fuel generator will produce 70–80% less emissions. The primary fuel in a dual fuel generator is hydrogen. To ensure that the generator does not shut down, diesel can also be burned. The goal, of course, is to run the generator on hydrogen as much as possible to minimize environmental impact.
In the maritime and agricultural sectors, there are already several trials underway with dual fuel systems using diesel and hydrogen. For example, tractor manufacturer New Holland has developed the H₂ Dual Power, and engine builder ABC, together with shipping company CMB, has developed an engine with a capacity of 1 MW.
